So, what happens after you spend an hour having a nervous breakdown talking to your husband about how you feel entirely unprepared for a new addition to the family? Why, you get up a mere 30 minutes after finally drifting off to sleep and your water breaks, of course! :-)
At 11:15 p.m. on Thursday, the 15th, my water broke. I was freaking out and went back to tell Trevor, who was dead asleep at the time. He sort of gave me a "that's nice honey" look out of one eye and started to roll over, then realized what I was telling him. We called the doctor's office and they told us to head up to the hospital. After a quick call to my Mom and frantically throwing random items in our suitcase (forgetting all the truly important stuff, of course), we headed up to Overland Park Regional. By the time we were in the car, my contractions had started and they continued to intensify as we made our way up to the maternity ward. They got us settled in a labor and delivery room right away. I was dilated to a 4 when we got there. After about an hour, I asked for some pain medication, which they added to my IV. Amie, the labor and delivery nurse, told me it wouldn't get rid of the contraction pain but would take the edge off. Not so much. The edge was definitely still there. So, when Amie popped back in and said the anesthesiologist was there in case I was ready for an epidural, I didn't have to think about it very long. I was nervous about the epidural, having something stuck in your spine is not my idea of fun, but I was really hurting and ended up being pleasantly surprised with how pain-free the epidural process was. The best part was, within a few minutes or so I felt much better and was able to doze a bit.
Around 6:00a.m. I started to feel the contractions again as they intensified, my body preparing for the hard pushing. We started pushing at 7:30a.m. and Dorian was born at 8:54a.m. My doctor wasn't able to deliver him because her father was undergoing cardiac surgery, but the midwife who delivered him was awesome! He weighed in at 5 lbs. 15 ozs. and is 18" long. It goes without saying that he is the cutest, sweetest, best baby in the world. :-)
So, that's all the typing my sleep-deprived and overjoyed brain can handle right now. Lots more pictures and details about the little stinker to come. I'll leave you with the important stuff - a few pictures taken by my Mom our first day as a family!
